Every so often the whole market seems to hold its breath before a scheduled announcement. The two biggest examples are interest-rate decisions and elections.

For example, the US Federal Reserve announces its rate decision on Wednesday 28 October 2026, and the US midterm elections take place on 3 November 2026. This lesson is not about those dates. It explains the mechanisms behind them, so you can read any similar week with a clear head.

It also explains something just as important: why none of this tells you what will happen next.

01. An interest rate is the price of money

A central bank sets the basic cost of borrowing in its currency. When that cost is high, loans are expensive and saving is rewarding. When it is low, loans are cheap and saving pays little.

That one number quietly shapes what everyone does with their money: whether a business borrows to grow, whether a person buys a home, whether an investor prefers safety or risk.

02. Three roads from interest rates to Bitcoin

The alternatives road. When safe assets such as government bonds or savings pay more, risky assets look less attractive by comparison. Money can move toward safety. When safe assets pay less, money looks for return elsewhere.

The borrowing road. Many traders use borrowed money to buy risky assets. Higher rates make that borrowing more expensive and reduce the money flowing into markets. Lower rates do the opposite.

The currency road. Rate changes can strengthen or weaken the US dollar, and most crypto is priced in dollars. A stronger dollar can weigh on prices measured in dollars. This effect is real but unreliable.

Notice the words "can" and "may". These are pressures, not rules.

03. Expectations matter more than the decision

Markets do not wait for the announcement. They guess it in advance, and prices move on the guess. By the time the decision arrives, the expected outcome is already "priced in".

What moves a market is the surprise: the gap between what was expected and what actually happened. A rate cut that everyone expected can change very little. A hold that nobody expected can move a lot.

The words matter too. The statement and the press conference that follow can shift expectations about the next meeting, and that is often what traders react to most.

04. Why elections matter

Elections decide who writes and approves the rules. In the United States, Congress passes the laws on taxes, spending, and how financial products, including crypto, are regulated.

The midterm elections happen halfway through a president's term. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and about a third of the Senate are contested, so the result can change what is politically possible for the following two years.

There are two effects. One is the actual policy change, which usually takes months or years. The other is uncertainty before the vote, which markets often dislike, and which can fade quickly once the result is known.

05. Why crypto reacts first and hardest

Stock markets close at night and on weekends. Bitcoin trades every hour of every day, across every country. When news arrives outside market hours, crypto is often the first place the reaction appears.

Leverage makes it sharper. When a price falls, traders using borrowed money can be forced to sell automatically, and those forced sales push the price down further. Fast moves are often partly mechanical, not only a verdict on the news.

06. What history can and cannot tell you

You will see claims such as "Bitcoin always falls before a midterm and rises after". Look at how little is behind them.

Bitcoin has traded with meaningful volume through only three US midterm elections: 2014, 2018, and 2022. Three observations are not a pattern. Other things were also happening in those years, including interest-rate changes and Bitcoin's own supply cycle, so it is impossible to say what caused what.

The link between Bitcoin and interest rates also changes over time. Sometimes it is strong. Sometimes it disappears. Anyone who gives you a confident prediction is selling certainty that does not exist.

What to do with all this

Know the date, so a big announcement does not catch you by surprise. Ask what is already expected, because that is what the price already contains. Be most careful with borrowed money around big events. And size any position by what you can afford to lose, as in the last lesson.

Most of all, do not trade the headline. Understand the system the headline sits in.

What This Means for TMN

TMN has no meaningful liquidity or market activity at present, so none of the forces in this lesson move its price in any real sense. This lesson is about understanding the market around you, not about TMN.

Ditoman takes no position on elections, governments, or policy from any side. We explain how systems work, and leave the opinions to you.

Question 1

What is an interest rate, in the simplest terms?

A. A tax on crypto

B. The price of borrowing money

C. The price of Bitcoin

D. A fee paid to exchanges

Correct answer: B

Question 2

Why can higher interest rates put pressure on risky assets such as Bitcoin?

Correct answer: Safe assets pay more, so risky ones look less attractive, and borrowing to buy them becomes more expensive.

C. The price cannot change anymore

D. Exchanges have set a fixed price

Correct answer: B

Question 4

True or False: Because Bitcoin fell before three past midterm elections, it will fall before the next one.

Correct answer: False. Three observations are not a pattern, and many other factors were at work.

Question 5

Why can crypto prices move fast around big news, even on weekends?

A. Because it trades around the clock, and leverage can force selling
